Two AI Receipt Trackers. Two Different Bets.
Tripl and HSA Vault are both AI-powered HSA receipt trackers built in the last two years. They look similar from the outside. Snap a receipt, AI reads it, you get a tax-ready record.
The bets underneath the surface are different. HSA Vault is positioned around audit-readiness and compliance content (their headline product hook is a 60-second compliance quiz). Tripl is positioned around the reimbursement math and long-horizon HSA strategy.
This is not a hit piece. HSA Vault is a real product solving a real problem. If you are picking between them, you should know what each one does well. You should also know where each one stops. This post covers price, features, and mobile experience. It also covers the question most reviews skip: how does the reimbursement workflow actually work?
A note up front on security badges. HSA Vault's site lists "SOC 2 Type II," "AES-256 Encrypted," and "HIPAA Aligned" as marketing claims. Tripl has not independently verified those audits. Neither should you, on a website badge alone. Ask any vendor (HSA Vault, Tripl, or anyone else) for the actual SOC 2 report before relying on those claims. More on that below.
If you want a wider scan, the best HSA tracker apps compares the field.
Tripl vs HSA Vault: Quick Verdict
Pick HSA Vault if you want a free tier with manual entry. You like quiz-driven onboarding. You only need a handful of AI scans per year.
Pick Tripl if you have many receipts or multiple HSA providers. You want a native iOS app. You care about delayed-reimbursement strategy and growth projections.
Both are real options. The right pick depends on how you actually use your HSA.

*Tripl has not independently verified HSA Vault's SOC 2 Type II audit, AES-256 implementation, or HIPAA alignment claims. Request the actual SOC 2 report from any vendor before relying on a website badge.*
The security row is the most important caveat in this entire post. HSA Vault may have a real, current SOC 2 Type II audit. They may not. The badge on a site is not the audit. Receipt tracking apps are also not generally HIPAA-covered entities themselves. HIPAA-aligned design is a useful goal, not a regulatory requirement that applies the same way it does to a hospital.
HSA Vault Review: Where It Is Strong
Three things HSA Vault does well based on their public marketing.
1. The quiz funnel. The 60-second compliance quiz is smart product marketing. It gets a user thinking about audit risk, then offers a tool to fix it. Most receipt trackers (Tripl included) ask you to imagine the future audit on your own. HSA Vault makes you feel it in 60 seconds.
2. A real free tier. Seven AI scans, unlimited manual entry, plus CSV export. A casual user can run the product forever for $0. That is honest freemium. Plenty of competitors gate the basics.
3. Educational content. Their resource library covers eligible expenses, contribution limits, and tracking best practices. If you are new to HSAs, that content meets you where you are.
If those three things are what you need, HSA Vault might be the better pick.
Where Tripl Is Strong
Four things Tripl does that HSA Vault does not appear to do. Based on their public marketing as of June 2026.
1. A native iOS app. Tripl ships on the App Store. HSA Vault is a progressive web app. A PWA works fine on a phone but never quite feels native. Snap a receipt at the pharmacy counter and hit the Apple share sheet. That iOS-native plumbing is something a PWA cannot match.
2. Email forwarding. Forward any receipt email to your unique Tripl address. The receipt parses and lands in your account. CVS, Amazon Pharmacy, your dental office, your kid's pediatrician portal. All of them email PDFs. You forward. You forget. Done.
3. Smart lump-sum reimbursement. This is the workflow most people actually use. You let receipts pile up, then pull a round number out of your HSA and pay yourself back. Tripl's reimbursement applies that lump to your oldest receipts first, automatically, so the math reconciles. HSA Vault tracks reimbursement status but does not appear to handle the many-to-many lump-sum case in a special way.
4. Growth projections per receipt. Every unreimbursed expense in Tripl shows what that money could be worth in 5, 10, and 20 years. Assumes you leave it invested. This is the core of the delayed reimbursement strategy. HSA Vault's marketing talks about audit-readiness. Tripl's marketing talks about the tax-free growth you give up every time you swipe the debit card. Different bets.
Pricing: $39/yr vs One-Time
The pricing models are not the same shape.
HSA Vault Pro is $39 per year. After 5 years, you have spent $195. After 10 years, $390. HSA tracking is a multi-decade activity. Subscriptions accumulate.
Tripl is free right now while we figure out who wants it most. The plan is a one-time fee at some point, not a subscription. If you sign up while it is free, you stay free for life. That is the commitment.
If subscription fatigue is not your concern, $39/year is a fair price for unlimited AI scans. If you already have a stack of monthly and yearly subscriptions, the one-time model lands differently.
The Mobile Question
Both products work on phones. The question is how.
HSA Vault is a progressive web app. You add it to your home screen. It works offline. No App Store download required. That is a nice feature for users who hate going through the store.
Tripl ships a native iOS app. Real notifications, real share sheet, real camera integration. No native Android yet (the web version works fine on Android).
For a family that takes a lot of receipt photos, the native iOS share sheet matters. You can be in your insurer's portal app, hit Share, send a PDF directly to Tripl. That round-trip with a PWA is clunkier.
For a desktop-first user who logs in once a week, a PWA is fine.
The Reimbursement Reality Check
Most reviews of HSA receipt apps stop at "does it scan receipts." That is the easy part. Every modern app does that reasonably well.
The hard part is what happens after a receipt is scanned. Specifically, how does the app handle a real-world reimbursement?
Here is the actual scenario. You have $1,847 of unreimbursed receipts going back 18 months. You log into your HSA provider's portal and pull $500 out as reimbursement. Now what?
In a spreadsheet, you reconcile by hand. In a typical receipt tracker, you mark four or five receipts as "reimbursed" until you hit roughly $500.
In Tripl, you hit Quick Reimburse and type $500. The app applies it to your oldest receipts until the $500 is allocated. The math reconciles. Your tax-free withdrawable balance updates instantly. At tax time, your Form 8889 is ready.
HSA Vault's marketing talks about reimbursement status tracking. That is closer to the manual model. If you are doing one reimbursement per month with three receipts each, manual is fine. If you are running a delayed-reimbursement strategy on a family HSA, manual breaks down fast. See why your HSA reimbursement record matters.

The Reframe
Both products are betting on different versions of the same user.
HSA Vault is betting on the user who needs to feel audit-ready. The compliance quiz is the hook. The educational content is the moat. That is a real user. Plenty of people open an HSA and get nervous about an IRS letter. They want a tool that says "you are covered."
Tripl is betting on the user who realizes the HSA is not a checking account. It is a 30-year tax-advantaged investment account that happens to need receipts. The growth projections are the hook. The smart lump-sum reimbursement is the moat. The user who gets that bet wants the tool to do the math, then get out of the way.
Neither bet is wrong. Pick the one that matches how you think about your HSA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tripl actually free?
Yes, right now. The plan is to charge a one-time fee at some point, not a subscription. Anyone who signs up while it is free stays free for life.
Does HSA Vault have an iPhone app?
Based on public marketing as of June 2026, HSA Vault is a progressive web app. You add it to your home screen rather than downloading from the App Store. Tripl ships a native iOS app on the App Store.
Are HSA Vault's SOC 2 and HIPAA claims verified?
HSA Vault's marketing copy lists "SOC 2 Type II," "AES-256 Encrypted," and "HIPAA Aligned" as security badges. Tripl has not independently verified the underlying audit reports. If those certifications matter to you, ask the vendor for the actual SOC 2 report before signing up. This is standard practice for any vendor.
Is HSA Vault legit and worth $39/year?
HSA Vault is a real product with a real free tier. $39/year for unlimited AI scans is a fair price if you are a casual user who needs more than 7 scans annually and prefers a yearly subscription model. The value question depends on whether you would prefer the one-time pricing model Tripl plans to use.
Can I import receipts from another tracker into Tripl?
Yes. Tripl supports CSV import for expense data. Receipt images can be uploaded in bulk via drag-and-drop or QR code from your phone.
Which one handles a family HSA better?
Tripl, in my opinion, because of the email forwarding and smart lump-sum reimbursement. A family with multiple kids generates receipts from many sources (pediatrician, dentist, pharmacy, urgent care, dental). Forwarding from your inbox beats opening an app every time. See the family HSA receipts guide for the broader workflow.
What about my old receipts from a previous HSA?
Both tools let you add historical receipts. Tripl was built around the case of switching HSA providers. My own HSA has changed twice in 4 years. Tripl is provider-agnostic, so the receipts stay with me regardless of where the money sits.
