Amazon has set Prime Big Deal Days for October 6 and 7, 2026. Deals open October 6 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific and run 48 hours. Prime members only.
An HSA does not care that the item was on sale. It cares that the item was medical care and that you kept the receipt. A discount on eligible items is a discount on money that was already tax-free. That is the whole reason to plan the cart.
This post covers what to stock up on and what to skip no matter the price. Then how to record the order.
Before the Sale: Three Setup Steps
- ●Add the HSA card in Payment options if you plan to use it. The how-to post walks through it.
- ●Turn on the "FSA or HSA eligible" filter when you search. Amazon's own filter is the fastest way to keep the cart clean.
- ●Decide now whether to pay with the HSA card or a regular card. The regular-card route leaves the money in the HSA. Either way the receipt is the same.
What to Stock Up On
These categories carry Amazon's eligibility badge. The middle column is the authority behind each one. Buy the year's supply if the price is right.
| Category | Why it qualifies | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| OTC medicine: pain relievers, allergy, cold, antacids | No prescription needed since the CARES Act in 2020, IRC §223(d)(2)(A) | Check expiration dates. A year's supply is fine. Three years is not |
| First aid: bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment | Medical supplies | The family first-aid kit refill |
| Thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters | Diagnostic devices | The one-time buys that go on sale |
| Menstrual care products | Treated as medical care under IRC §223(d)(2)(A) | Bulk packs are the sale item |
| Contact lens solution, reading glasses | Vision care, Publication 502 | |
| Sunscreen, broad-spectrum | Amazon tags it | Keep the product page with the receipt |
| Masks, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes | IRS Announcement 2021-7, for preventing COVID-19 | The purpose is the condition |
| Heating pads, hot and cold packs, TENS units | Amazon tags them |
What to Skip at Any Price
| Item | Why not |
|---|---|
| Vitamins, supplements, protein powder | Pub 502 excludes them without a practitioner's recommendation for a diagnosed condition |
| Fitness trackers, massage guns, foam rollers | "Merely beneficial to general health" without a Letter of Medical Necessity |
| Electric toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss | Personal-use items |
| Air purifiers, humidifiers | General household use, unless a doctor prescribes one for a specific condition |
| Anything without the badge | Amazon will not charge the HSA card for it, and the badge is the first filter |
A deal on an ineligible item is still a deal. It just is not an HSA purchase. Pay for it with a regular card and keep it off the HSA record.
The Mixed Cart
A Prime sale cart can be mixed. A thermometer next to a kitchen gadget. Amazon's FSA FAQ says it splits the charge. The eligible items go on the HSA card and the rest goes on a second card, automatically.
If you are paying with a regular card instead, nothing splits. The Order Details page still does the sorting for you, which is the next section.
The One Line to Record
Amazon's Order Details page prints a line under the Order Summary: "FSA or HSA eligible (inc. tax and shipping): $X.XX." That line is the sum of the badged items plus their share of tax and shipping.
It is the number to record. Not the grand total. Save the invoice as a PDF from Your Orders. The Amazon receipt post walks through the page.
One more thing on returns. Amazon's returns page is clear. A refund for an item bought with an FSA or HSA card goes back to that card. If you return a sale item, remove it from the HSA record too.
What to Do With the Receipt
Tripl is an HSA receipt tracker. Forward the Amazon order confirmation email or upload the invoice PDF. Tripl reads the date, the amount, the category, and the description. Edit the amount to the eligible line if the order was mixed.
The receipt is stored in the cloud. Connect Google Drive or Dropbox and it mirrors to your own account too. Two copies, two places.
Tripl is $30 per year for the first 100 sign-ups. After that, $50 a year.
