Is Sunscreen HSA-Eligible? Yes, With One Rule.

Yes. Sunscreen is HSA-eligible as long as it is SPF 15 or higher. No prescription needed.

The IRS classifies sunscreen as a preventive health product. SPF 15+ products qualify under IRS Section 213(d) as medical care expenses. This has been the rule since before the CARES Act. The 2020 law expanded OTC coverage, but sunscreen was already eligible.

What Qualifies

  • Sunscreen lotions and sprays (SPF 15+)
  • Sunscreen sticks (SPF 15+)
  • Lip balm with SPF 15+
  • Moisturizers with SPF 15+ if marketed as sun protection

What Does Not Qualify

  • Tanning oils or tanning accelerators
  • Self-tanning products (they do not protect against UV)
  • Products below SPF 15

The SPF number is the deciding factor. Check the label before you buy.

The Numbers Add Up

A family of four buying sunscreen regularly can easily spend $100 to $200 per year. That is $100 to $200 in HSA-eligible expenses most people never track. Over 10 years, that is $1,000 to $2,000 in receipts you could reimburse tax-free.

Sunscreen is one of dozens of everyday purchases that qualify. OTC medications, first aid supplies, and menstrual products are all eligible since the CARES Act. See the full list for the complete breakdown.

Save the Receipt

Keep your sunscreen receipts with your other HSA records. If you are using the delayed reimbursement strategy, every receipt adds to your future tax-free withdrawal balance. Small purchases add up to real money over time.

Tripl tracks these receipts alongside all your other medical expenses and keeps them organized automatically.
