Kroger operates more than 2,700 stores under a variety of banner names. Its prescription page says Kroger Family Pharmacies accept HSA and FSA payment for eligible products. Its delivery FAQ lists FSA/HSA among accepted payment methods.
Kroger also runs a Shop HSA & FSA Eligible Products page.
Three official mentions, three different checkout lanes. None of them is the grocery aisle by itself.
This post covers where the card works at Kroger as of September 2026. Then how eligible items get flagged, what the receipt shows, and how to pull an itemized copy.
Where the HSA Card Works
At the pharmacy. This is the lane Kroger documents most clearly. The prescription page says you can add a credit, debit, FSA, or HSA card in My Prescriptions. Do that before pickup and the counter goes faster.
On delivery orders. Kroger's delivery FAQ lists credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, FSA/HSA, and SNAP as accepted. Cash, check, and WIC are not.
At the front register. As of September 2026, Kroger's own help pages do not spell out the front-lane flow. They describe the pharmacy path and the delivery path.
So verify before you count on it. Expect the card to behave like any benefit card at a grocery register. Eligible items approve, and everything else needs a second payment.
If the card gets declined, nothing is lost. Pay with a regular card. Keep the receipt. Reimburse yourself from the HSA later.
Who Decides What Is Eligible
A grocery register does not read Publication 502. It matches each UPC against an eligible-products list built for benefit cards.
That list belongs to SIGIS, the Special Interest Group for IIAS Standards. Walmart's help page says it works with SIGIS, "who reviews UPCs," and does not make the call itself.
That is why an HSA card can work in a store with no pharmacist checking the cart. Walmart HSA Eligible Items and the Receipt That Proves It walks through the same machinery.
The list is a helper, not the rule. Publication 502 is what the IRS goes by. When a register approves something Pub 502 excludes, Pub 502 still wins.
Finding Eligible Items
Online and in the app. Kroger runs a Shop HSA & FSA Eligible Products page at kroger.com/i/hsa-fsa. A second HSA/FSA Shop sits under the pharmacy section.
Individual product pages carry an FSA and HSA eligible label. The Claritin, Imodium, and Nexium listings all showed it on 2026-09-23.
Brand pages. Kroger runs FSA and HSA landing pages for Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson products. Those are catalogs, not eligibility rulings.
In the aisle. Scan the item in the app before the register. Shelf tags vary by store and by banner.
The Kroger Receipt
Benefits administrators report that Kroger-owned stores print "FX" beside items that qualify as medical expenses. That is a reported pattern, not a Kroger guarantee.
Letters do not carry between chains. The same administrators report "F" at CVS, an "FSA" tag at Walgreens, and "H" elsewhere. A letter on one chain's receipt says nothing about another chain's.
Treat the marker as a hint. The proof is the line itself. Product name, price, date, store.
To file it:
- ●Find the eligible lines, with or without an FX.
- ●Add them up. Include the sales tax on those lines.
- ●Record that number, not the receipt total.
A $184 Kroger run with $27 of allergy medicine and bandages is a $27 HSA expense. The receipt proves the $27. The other $157 is groceries.
Pharmacy Counter vs Grocery Aisle
| Pharmacy counter | Grocery aisle | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical purchase | Prescriptions, immunizations, OTC medicine | OTC medicine, first aid, devices |
| Card acceptance | Stated on Kroger's prescription page | Not spelled out on Kroger's help pages as of September 2026 |
| Receipt | Printout with drug, patient, date, Rx number | Store receipt with line items |
| Audit strength | Strong on its own | Strong if the eligible lines are readable |
A pharmacy printout is close to self-proving. A grocery receipt needs you to mark which lines you claimed.
Fred Meyer, Ralphs, and the Other Banners
Your Kroger trip may ring up under a different name. Kroger's own business page names Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Smith's, Fry's, Harris Teeter, and Mariano's among its banners.
Your receipt says the banner, not Kroger. That is fine. Pub 502 cares about the expense, not the sign over the door.
The FX pattern is reported across Kroger-owned stores, not only stores named Kroger. Check your own receipt before counting on it.
Getting an Itemized Receipt
Thermal paper fades. Kroger keeps a digital copy.
- ●Purchase history lives at kroger.com/mypurchases.
- ●Digital receipts have their own page at kroger.com/i/receipt.
- ●The Kroger app shows the digital receipt for a trip.
Two habits make this work. Scan the loyalty card or Alt ID on every trip. Use the account that matches your profile. No scan, no digital record.
Digital history is a good backup. It is not a substitute for the image. Keep the photo.

The Grocery Receipt Problem
One Kroger trip mixes milk, fuel points, and ibuprofen. The HSA claim is the ibuprofen.
That is what makes grocery receipts harder than pharmacy receipts. A pharmacy printout lists medicine. A Kroger receipt lists whatever was in the cart. The eligible lines hide among the food.
Mark them the day you shop. A month later you will not remember which trip had the thermometer. How to Tell If Something on Your Receipt Is HSA-Eligible covers what to look for line by line.
Photograph It Into Tripl
Snap the receipt in the parking lot. That is the whole habit.
Tripl is an HSA receipt tracker. Take the photo from your phone. Tripl reads the date, amount, category, and description.
Edit the amount down to the eligible lines. Put the item names in the description.
The image stays attached to the expense. Connect Google Drive or Dropbox and it mirrors to your own account too. Two copies, two places.
There is no deadline on reimbursing yourself. Pay with a regular card today. Pull the money out of the HSA years later. The saved receipt is what makes that work.
Tripl is $30 per year for the first 100 sign-ups. After that, $50 a year.
