What You Need to Know
Weight loss programs occupy a conditional category for HSA eligibility. The IRS does not consider general weight management or cosmetic weight loss a medical expense. However, if a physician diagnoses you with a specific disease (such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease) and prescribes a weight loss program as treatment, the program costs become HSA-eligible. This includes structured programs like Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem when prescribed, weight loss medications, and medically supervised programs. You will need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from your doctor that documents the diagnosis and the prescribed treatment.
