An EOB is not a bill. UnitedHealthcare's own page says so in those words. It is the insurer's statement of what a visit cost, what the plan paid, and what you owe.
For an HSA, that last number is the one that matters. The EOB is the cleanest proof that a $180 bill was really a $180 bill after insurance. The problem is finding it. Every insurer puts it behind a login, under a different menu.

What an EOB Shows
UnitedHealthcare's page lists what its EOB shows:
- ●The date you got the service
- ●The amount billed
- ●The amount covered
- ●The amount the plan paid
- ●The balance you are responsible for paying the provider
That balance is your HSA-eligible amount for the visit. The EOB proves the number. The receipt from the provider proves you paid it. Keep both.
Aetna
As of September 2026, Aetna's member pages cover this. You can "view, print or download your EOB statement and other documents, anytime" on the member website. The Aetna Health app shows claims as well.

UnitedHealthcare
UnitedHealthcare's EOB page says to "sign in to your member account or use the UnitedHealthcare app." It adds that you can "review your EOB information online at myuhc.com."

- ●Go to Claims.
- ●Select the claim.
- ●View or download the EOB.
Cigna
Cigna's claims page says "your EOB is now online at myCigna." You can go paperless or keep getting paper EOBs by mail. The myCigna portal also shows claim status, deductible remaining, and any HSA, HRA, or FSA balance Cigna administers.

- ●Select the claim and download.
Blue Cross Blue Shield
Blue Cross Blue Shield is 30-plus independent regional plans. The portal name and the menu differ by state. Two examples from the plans' own help pages:
BCBS Illinois. Log in to Blue Access for Members. Open the Claims Center tab. It shows "a complete list of your claims for the past 18 months." Click the claim number to open the EOB.
BCBS Michigan. Log in at bcbsm.com. Look for the Explanation of Benefits link under Claims. Select a claim.
If an EOB is available, it appears there. Paperless members get an email when a new EOB is ready.
The two examples above are the common shape. Steps vary by plan. Search your plan's help center for "explanation of benefits."
The 18-Month Problem
BCBS Illinois shows 18 months of claims. The other three do not publish a window on the pages checked. Do not treat any portal as a permanent archive.
The HSA reimbursement window has no deadline. A 2026 dental bill can be reimbursed in 2036. The EOB that proves it may not be in the portal in 2028.
So the rule is simple. Download the EOB when the claim closes. If that did not happen, download every EOB once a year, before the oldest ones drop off. A January afternoon covers a whole year of claims.
What to Name and Where to Keep It
Name the file with the date, the provider, and the patient. "2026-08-14 Dr Patel dental Brandon.pdf" beats "EOB (3).pdf" in an audit.
